Excuse me for interrupting the Paris fashion week coverage, but let's jump back in time to when I was in London a couple of weeks ago with Mother. Each time I'm back in town we aim to try out one or two new restaurants, always hoping to add to our roster of vegetarian-friendly Michelin-starred havens. This time we had a major success with Tom Aikens' place over in Chelsea.
I decided to wear an all grey outfit for the occasion, mainly because I wanted to show off this new slate-coloured shirt from Damir Doma's SS 13 collection. It has a really interesting, criss-crossing collar, which I wore buttoned down since that's how the lovely folks on The Corner had styled it. When I visited the Damir Doma store in Paris last week, however, I discovered it's meant to be worn up, oversized Mao style. Oh well, you live and learn.
Anyway, back to the food. Tom Aikens was delicious. We weren't quite sure what to expect, given that it was rather a last minute booking (our first choice of the Lecture Room and Library at Sketch being full) but I had an inkling things would be good after seeing Tom cook on television several times. The restaurant is very chic, dark and sophisticated and the staff discreet but helpful. It also has an entirely vegetarian menu available as an option. I forgot to take my proper camera with me so I've attached my crappy instagram photos below. Between us we managed to consume: char-grilled and baked celeriac with a truffle cream and apple consommé; baked onion with gruyère custard; vegetable lasagne made from black olive pasta and tomato fondue; and an array of coconut and mango themed desserts, including a parfait, a mouse and a sorbet. I really have no complaints, everything was delicious, right down to the complex Antica Formula the sommelier recommended as an aperitif instead of Martini rosso. After dessert we were presented with the biggest selection of petits fours I've ever seen — we only managed to eat about half the offering of chocolates, macarons and miniature pastries before giving up and climbing into our taxi back to the Melia White House.
